Has anyone been to a 10-day Vipassna retreat? I was wondering what their experience was? I have never been to one, nor any retreat that long...But I would like to deepend my meditation practice and feel that I need to go to an intense retreat like this.

Re: 10-day Vipassna retreats
Mon, March 14, 2005 - 3:48 PMThe Vipassana retreat is unlike anything I've ever been through. In all reality it was much more than I had ever expected it could be. Honestly it was one of the most difficult ten days I've ever been through, but at the same time it was also some of the most fruitful. I highly recommend this experience to one and all. However if you do go the most important part is to not give up within the ten days. I had times when I contimplated leaving but I didn't and I'm so greatful that I didn't.
The meditation process is nothing short of amazing. It is unlike any other meditation process I've ever been witness to. It is difficult but it is also a life changer.
With all my metta

Re: 10-day Vipassna retreats
Mon, March 14, 2005 - 5:27 PMDifficult. Put yourself through the wringer and come out a new person. Changed my life.
Advice - Do lots of meditation before to get warmed up,
Start getting up early cause first call is like 5am,
Do lots of yoga and bodywork BEFORE you go cause there's no stretching when you're there, and it's physically very challenging.
i'd recommend it.

Re: 10-day Vipassna retreats
Tue, March 29, 2005 - 10:21 AMYou don't say what your previous experience is. I have done 2 three-day retreats, and then last summer after I retired, I did a six-day retreat. The last two of these was with a lesbian and gay group (Arinna Weismann and different gay male teachers) have annual retreats at Spirit Rock (CA) and Cloud Mountain (WA) and probably also in the East Coast. I found the six-day retreat to be a deepening one, but not a dramatic dark night of the soul.
As a gay man, I strongly recommend LGBT teachers, because there is less that you have to explain to a teacher who is family.
I would try to arrange my schedule so that I am not just plunked down into the retreat setting, but have some time to "warm up" to it. I took 304 days camping out in the Olympic Rain forest before, and that certainly helped calm me down. -

Tue, March 29, 2005 - 8:27 PMHey David,
Thanks for your reply. I have never done a meditation retreat, and I understand that it's important to do a lot of meditation before going to a lengthy retreat. I'd be very interested in hearing more about the gay meditation retreats that you referred to. Good advice about making time to warm up :)

Re: 10-day Vipassna retreats
Tue, March 29, 2005 - 10:05 PMThe transition time into retreat is a great suggestion. I'd also try to take some time to transition out before being back in whatever your regular world is. (I have done multiple 3,5,7, and 10 day retreats and a 4 month retreat in Nepal. Not all Vipassana) -

Re: 10-day Vipassna retreats
Sat, April 2, 2005 - 10:16 PMI did a 10 day V in Thailand a few years ago. There we did 9 hrs of meditation each day, the whole time in silence. It was very, very difficult.

GLBT retreats, preparation
Mon, April 4, 2005 - 11:14 AMHello Chip,
It isn't important to do a lot of meditation in advance of a retreat, but it is a good idea not to have a full mind, so being able to take a day or so off before beginning is a good idea.
I did a 3-day retreat immediately after a technical conference at work, and it took me over a day just to let the technical stuff that my mind was full of, boil away!
Here are links to LGBT retreats I know about:
April 19-24 at Spirit Rock, No. Cal
www.spiritrock.org/html/sched_april.html
August 5-11 at Cloud Mountain (SW Washington State)
www.cloudmountain.org/august_2005.htm#A5
I have done retreats with Arinna and Eric, recommend them both highly

Re: GLBT retreats, preparation
Wed, April 6, 2005 - 9:34 PMI would agree that is NOT important to have done lots of meditation prior to a retreat. I think everyone should just go and do a 10 day - it's prefect for a beginner - no need to "work up to it".
I do, however, think you should do lots of SITTING prior to a retreat. If you're not used to sitting on the floor (there's lots of cushions and whatnot to prop up your butt in the meditation hall) you will have a harder time than someone who sits on the floor (with a straight back) on a regular basis. Practice with cushions at home - get to where you can sit in the same position for an hour without moving. It's not an easy thing to do - I recommend propping your butt so your hips tilt forward, your back is striaght and your legs across in front of you. If you have a bad back or knees you can request a chair - but it must be done well in advance.

Re: 10-day Vipassna retreats
Thu, April 7, 2005 - 4:49 AMi definately think that if you have the intention to really learn how to mediate, you should go on this retreat. the way the retreat is structured is incredibly effective (Goenka is a strict but compassionate and very intelligent teacher!) and it will absolutely have an impact on your practice, even if you decide not to strictly use the Vipassana technique.
i don't think you need to prepare too much for this retreat, just make sure you really intend to go through the purification process, otherwise you will have a hard time.
i wish you all the best on your journey home

Re: 10-day Vipassna retreats
Thu, April 7, 2005 - 1:55 PMI found the replies to my query compassionate and caring. Gave me a nice warm feeling :). Thank you for giving me some food for thought. It was very enlightening hearing others' experience of the 10-day Vipassna retreat. I truly feel that I want to take the meditation to a deeper level, and this seems an opportunity to do that. I submitted my application over a week ago and haven't heard anythng back from the organization, but will follow-up with them.

Re: 10-day Vipassna retreats
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 10:49 AMMay all be happy. May all be free. May all experience peace and harmony. Work. A challenge. A life- altering experience, especially when one sticks to the discipline with constancy and consistency. 10- days, approximately 10 hours a day of silent meditation and observation, seeing things how they really are. I feel amazing after meditation whether it be morning, noon, or night. Learning how one can control their reactions to situations has been extremely helpful to me. Anyone can practice the meditation, but essentially it is up to you to follow through and be true to yourself. May all beings be free from the bondages of their suffering. Warm regards and positive encouragement. ~Ariel -

Re: 10-day Vipassna retreats
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 4:52 PMClear a space, perhaps a particular part of the room that is used strictly and solely for meditating. Set aside a certain time of day / night that you WILL sit, even if you are not "meditating" in the technical sense. This means, the computer and phone, etc. are OFF, your eyes are closed, and you are bringing as much of your attention to the practice as you can -- each day / night keep this time set aside for this and, over time, your intention & resolve will increase.
The 10-day retreats are good for extracting you from the distractions and such that get in the way so to give you a chance to give the practice is rightful justice. After that, it's up to you to maintain that clarity and distinction and, to me, what the whole practice is about. I have done the one 10-day practice back in Oct. and quickly lost track of the regular practice upon return. Now, I sit when I can -- and have set plans to return for another 10-day at the end of the summer. By then, I hope to have a more regular practice, or, at least on my way to one, in the process of using the 10 days to deepen my commitment and intention.
