I have tried over the years on and off to learn to meditate without any luck. I couldn't go longer than 10 minutes and I was waiting for my timer to go off.

I know I would greatly benefit from meditation but I don't know how to learn how. I was told by an old friend last week that "I think too much" and I know I do. How do I learn to quiet the mind?

This is probably not the best time to be posting this as starting Monday I will be driving from Woodside to Oakland at 6:00 AM and then after 9 hours of lecture and clinical I will be driving back to the Peninsula to work for 4 hours before arriving home at 9:00 PM. Then I'll have homework and I am not sure how I am going to fit in yoga let alone start a meditation practice. But this will last only for the month of July.

Since I will be spending a lot more time in my car than usual does anyone have any audio book suggestions on meditation?

  • 1. I would advise you to use a 11-mukhi rudraksha , tied on the forehead in the 3rd eye region. please use this during meditation-dhyana. Initially you might feel a little drowsy , but it will help you reduce the chatter. You can perform this , just after taking bath for half an hour.
For some people, this happens after a month of use of Rudraksha, for some its instantaneous.
    2. Regularly practise Trataka. Please refer this link to understand Trataka en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trataka.
    3. reduce caffaine intake.
  • It's not about meditation per se, but The Power of Now is a decent place to start if you're looking to cultivate a calm, peaceful mind. It is available as an audio book. I probably don't need to say this but I will anyway. I would avoid listening any audio books that include meditation instruction while you're driving :)
    • no specific suggestions re an audio book...

      but a couple of things.

there are some practicing psychologist who have a background in meditation. Sometimes, in Tricycle Magazine, there are ads for Buddhists who are practicing psychologists. The combination might be interesting for you.

for ADHD - might want to consider going to a Holistic MD and getting a fully medical assessment. There might be some dietary changes that you can make that would help you.

As far as meditation itself is concerned, there might be a few ideas.

might try kinhin...walking meditation. That helps distract the mind a bit so that meditation is easier.

might try reading some scriptures and doing some relaxation exercises before meditating. Might help focus the mind.

There are specific concentration exercises, that might help you as well.

Might try a basic meditation form like Ramanama...where you are silently chanting a name of God, that can also help the concentration.

And don't try to force it. If you just meditate for a few minutes every day, I think, over time, it will start to become part of you. Just try to sit in meditation for 2 or 3 minutes. If, after that, you want to extend it to 5 minutes or 15, you can. But if you just sit, every day, for those 2 or 3 minutes, and then longer when you feel like it...I think it will ease you into the practice in a way that keeps your mind from rebelling against the process

      Namaste
  • I don't have ADHD but do have a very unquiet mind. While not the same, I find reciting mantra (especially the Gayatri mantra) helpful. It given me something to do. Whenever I sit down to meditate I find myself like a child asking: "Are we there yet?".
    • I found a CD from Deepak Chopra "The Soul of Healing Meditations." It's several meditations built upon each other. I like to listen to it in the car to remind me to be mindful. This tend to help when other drivers are swervy, reckless, and dangerous. I can stay calm without flipping out that some other person is putting my life in danger. I can just breathe and get out of the way.

So I don't know if it will help the ADD/ADHD - but it helps me a lot.
  • I know it’s different for everyone, but for me, I found meditation through the “back door” so to speak. I was caught up in the corporate world of hi-tech and the “noise” in my head was deafening! I was so chronically distracted that if I had tried to meditate directly, it would have been a disaster. I have no direct experience with ADHD, but I can’t imagine that it’s too much different than the place I was. My journey began with Qi cultivation arts (Qigong and Tai Chi) and through my practice, the noise just sort of went away by itself. I didn’t have to try to meditate, I just got to a point where I could sit (or stand) and everything was just quiet. Ultimately it was my movement practices that began smoothing things out and opening up my awareness of the more subtle aspects of life. Maybe the “stillness in motion” nature of Qi practices could help quiet things down for you, too.
    • There are many ways to meditate as stated in books and such, but i believe one needs a true Guru/master who has perfected the meditation techniques and is capable of empowering/initiating someone. I've met a Guru.....YOGA JNANA SITTHAR OM SRI RAJAYOGA GURU.

His Divine Grace is A sitthar on earth right now who is helping common people like us by initiating/ empowering us.Sitthars are capable of doing absolutely anything. These beings are able to transform themselves into a mountain/ change into an atom/ materialise things from thin air/ walk on water etc - anything at all!

His Divine Grace (HDG) Yoga Jnana Sitthar Om Sri Rajayoga Guru had an inherent thirst to realise God from a very young age. Over the early years HDG exhibited Divine Powers and special abilities obtained through various Divine experiences.

Realising the necessity of a Guru to progress spiritually, HDG searched for a genuine Guru. But this was an arduous task as the gurus made use of HDG special abilities for their own benefit. In this way, the false gurus got fame and good name at the expense of our Guru.

Being very disheartened, HDG started to pray steadfastly alone. Subsequently, this led to amazing meetings with true Gurus who passed on japas and mantras of God realisation to HDG.

HDG Yoga Jnana Sitthar Om Sri Rajayoga spent over twenty seven years researching fully understanding the the secrets of Rajayoga. By japas, penances and prayers, our Guru obtained many Divine Visions. HDG wanted all people to obtain the benefits of Yogic Power, Initially, Now, as arranged by the disciples, HDG is empowering everyone with the Yoga Power. Now, our Guru, fondly known as Dato Seri Guruji, has more than a hundred thousand disciples from Malaysia and all over the world, who are living a healthy, successful and protected life

His Divine Grace Yoga Jnana Sitthar Om Sri Rajayoga Guru exhibits true leadership by example, by virtue of being a highly attained spiritual master as well as being a scientist, having obtained a Philosophical Doctorate in Metaphysics and Parapsychology. His Divine Grace has also been acknowledged as the “Mahaguru of Malaysia” in the highly acclaimed book “Malaysia’s Who’s Who” (Year 2007 Volume 1 page 506). Hence, His Divine Grace is very successful in all aspects, be it spirituality, education, wealth or family life. His Divine Grace is a living example of how one can be successful simultaneously both in worldly and spiritual life using the Divine Power called Yogasakhti. His Divine Grace is indeed a great inspiration for all disciples to progress and become great achievers in life.

YOGA JNANA SITTHAR OM SRI RAJAYOGA GURU SARANAM
      • This basic form of energy is the life-sustaining force which keeps the universe and all its animate and inanimate objects "alive". Organic and inorganic cycles are also operating based on this subtle energy. One’s ability to acquire and penetrate the skill of accumulating pranic energy in one’s body rests totally in the hands of the Master who teaches it. As for RPT, the Divine Master, Yoga Jnana Sitthar Om Sri Rajayoga Guru has completely mastered this art and possesses the ability to transmit the skills of utilizing one’s own pranic energy, to disciples. This is only possible after the empowerment session, as he/she will be able to utilize this pranic energy to achieve success in both material and spiritual domains. These skills and abilities are achievable by anyone regardless of race, religion or nationality. The process of transmitting the skills and termed empowerment is made possible by the Divine Master’s complete mastery of the science of Rajayoga
